A simple skincare routine for beginners

You do not need ten steps to take good care of your skin. Begin with a small routine you can repeat, then let your own experience guide what comes next.

Skincare can become overwhelming quickly: cleanser types, active ingredients, layering rules and a new trend every week. A useful beginner routine is much quieter. Its job is to cleanse gently, support comfort and hydration, and protect exposed skin from the sun.

The three-step foundation: a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser that feels comfortable, and broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day. Your routine can stay this simple.

Morning: protect and prepare

1. Cleanse—or simply rinse

A gentle cleanse can remove overnight oil and residue. Some people with dry or easily irritated skin prefer a water rinse in the morning. What matters is that skin does not feel tight or stripped afterwards.

2. Moisturise

Moisturiser can help reduce water loss and support a more comfortable skin surface. Texture is personal: gels often feel lighter, while creams and ointments are richer. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that creams and ointments generally provide more moisture than lotions for dry skin.

3. Sunscreen

Finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen suitable for your location and skin. Follow the label for amount, reapplication and water resistance. Sunscreen is the final skincare step before makeup.

Evening: remove the day and reset

1. Cleanse gently

Remove sunscreen, makeup and daily residue without aggressive scrubbing. If one gentle cleanse removes everything comfortably, a second cleanser is not automatically necessary.

2. Use a treatment only if you need one

Beginners often do better adding one optional active at a time. That makes it easier to notice whether a product suits you. Stronger is not always better, and several new actives introduced together can make the cause of irritation hard to identify.

3. Moisturise

Use a moisturiser that leaves skin comfortable. Applying it while skin is slightly damp can help trap existing water at the surface.

How to add a new product

  1. Check the label and instructions.
  2. Patch test according to the product guidance.
  3. Add one product at a time.
  4. Start less frequently when the label or a qualified professional recommends a gradual introduction.
  5. Stop if you experience persistent burning, swelling, blistering or another concerning reaction, and seek professional advice.

When a simple routine is not enough

Persistent pain, bleeding, marked swelling, a spreading rash, sudden changes or a concern that affects daily life deserves advice from a pharmacist, GP or dermatologist. A skincare routine cannot diagnose or replace medical care.
